Quoth

Sit down with a book in the language you’re learning.

Quoth is a small library for reading in another language. Spanish, today. You choose a book at your level, open it, and read. When a word stops you, tap it and the meaning appears above the line. Keep the words worth keeping, and they come back later as cards, in the sentences you found them in.

FOR THE SELF-DIRECTED

For anyone learning a language on their own terms. Pick a book at your level, tap what you don’t know, and let it read to you, so you hear the language while you see it. Nothing to earn, no one keeping score.

Quoth won’t teach you a language by itself. It’s where the reading part gets to be a pleasure.

THE SHELF

Start on the Shelf.

Quoth comes with a shelf of public-domain books in Spanish, arranged from first steps to the classics: folk and fairy tales, then adventure and detective stories, up to Homer, Dante and Shakespeare in translation. Each one is prepared before you open it, so every answer is already waiting on the page.

Pick a book you want to read, and go at the pace that feels comfortable.

THE READING PAGE

Tap for the meaning.

A tap shows what the word means, above the word, in the sentence it’s in. It appears instantly, so you can keep reading.

Curious? The word’s card is a press away, with its other senses and every form of it you’ve met so far.

PHRASES

The book already knows its phrases.

Some meaning lives in three words, not one. Quoth marks those with a quiet ochre dash, so a tap there gives you the whole expression.

You can also drag across any run of words, a phrase or a whole sentence, to see it translated in context.

A phrase marked with an ochre dash in the reading page, glossed as a whole expression above the line.

SAVING

Keep what’s worth keeping.

Tap the bookmark on any answer and the word is yours. It takes the accent color, on this page and every page after, so you notice it the next time it comes around.

REVIEW

Then review.

The words you kept come back as cards, each in the sentence you met it in. You read it, you try to remember, you grade yourself. A spaced-repetition schedule decides when you see it again, so the ones you know stay out of the way and the ones you don’t come back sooner.

There’s a small daily goal if you want one. No annoying pop-ups or notifications. You decide when to review.

READ ALOUD

Hear it read.

Press play and the page reads itself in a Spanish voice, each word lit as it’s spoken, the pages turning on their own. Read along, or close your eyes for a while.

IPHONE

Also in your pocket.

The same shelf and the same book on your iPhone, with your place and your words already there. A flick turns the page.

COMING SOON

Bring your own book.

Soon you’ll be able to add a book of your own, a PDF, an EPUB or plain text, and have it prepared the same way as the Shelf: every word answered, every phrase marked, before you turn the first page. It’s kept privately in your account and follows you to any of your devices.

The small things.

Some of what you’ll find once you’re reading.

  • A verb’s word card, listing the forms of it met so far.

Smart vocab cards. Quoth knows “corría” and “corrió” are the same verb, so the forms you keep share one card.

  • The names sheet, listing the characters met so far and where each first appeared.

Names without spoilers. Who’s who in the book, showing only the names you’ve already met.

  • A book’s page in Quoth: its word count, its distinct words, and the words it uses most.

The book’s page. How long it is, how many different words it uses, and which of them are worth learning first.

  • The theme sheet, with paper colours and reading typefaces to choose from.

Paper and type. Six papers, light and dark, and five typefaces made for long reading.

  • The Account section at the top of the Settings sheet.

Your words, everywhere. Sign in with Apple and your words and your place in each book follow you.
