What Quoth is
Quoth is an app for iPad and iPhone for learning Spanish by reading books. You read, you tap a word you don't know, you see what it means, and the words you keep become review cards. This page says what the app collects, where it goes, and how to get rid of it.
What we collect and why
Signing in. Quoth signs you in with Sign in with Apple. Apple confirms the sign-in and the app receives an account identifier, which we store so your saved words and your place in each book can find their way back to you on a new or restored device. If you choose to share your name and email address at sign-in, those are stored too, only to label the account row in Settings. If you use Hide My Email, the relay address Apple generates is all we ever see. There is no password, and we don't send you mail.
What syncs. Once you are signed in, the following is kept in a private area of our database that only your account can read or write:
- words and phrases you saved, each with the sentence you found it in, its translation, and the title of the book it came from
- phrase patterns you saved
- your review cards, and your review history: the grade you gave each card and when you gave it
- how many pages you turned on each day
- which books you have added from Quoth's shelf, and for each one its title and author, how far through it you are, and where you left off, filed under a fingerprint of the book's text
That is the whole list. It exists so a lost device doesn't cost you your vocabulary.
What is sent to translate a word. When you tap a word or a phrase and the app doesn't already have the answer, it sends that word and the sentence around it, and for a single word a few lines from earlier in the passage so the answer fits the story, to our own server, which passes it to Anthropic's Claude API and hands the answer back. Nothing else goes with it: not the book, and nothing about you beyond the check that you are signed in. Books from Quoth's shelf already carry their translations, so a great many taps never reach the network at all, and every answer is cached on your device, so the same word is never asked twice.
What stays on your device
The text of your books does. Every book comes from Quoth's own shelf. The app downloads it when you add it, and its text is never uploaded: what syncs is which books you have added and your place in each, and a second device downloads the book from the shelf for itself. Your translation cache stays too, and so do your covers, your settings, and anything Apple's on-device model works out when it answers a lookup without the network. Reading aloud uses Apple's on-device speech. The page is spoken on the device, not streamed from anywhere.
Who processes your data
- Apple handles the sign-in itself, so we never see your Apple Account credentials, and provides the on-device speech and the on-device model, neither of which sends anything anywhere.
- Google Firebase runs the sign-in service, the database your saved words sync to, and the storage the shelf's books are downloaded from, on Google's servers in the United States.
- Anthropic answers translation lookups through the Claude API. Under Anthropic's commercial API terms, what is sent through the API is not used to train their models.
There is nobody else. Your data is not shared with, sold to, or handed on to any other party.
What we don't do
No advertising. No analytics or crash-reporting kit of any sort. The app does not count your taps, build a profile of you, or phone home. No tracking across other apps or websites. Nothing sold or rented to anyone, ever.
Keeping and deleting your data
What you save is kept for as long as your account exists.
Settings → Delete Account removes the account and everything stored under it: words, cards, review history, reading tallies, book progress. It also clears the saved words and progress from the device. That is permanent: there is no trash to restore from and no backup we can go back to. The books themselves stay on the device; you can remove those the usual way.
Signing out is the gentler option. It stops syncing and leaves everything on the device where it is. Sign in again and it picks up where it left off.
Children
Quoth is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version appears here with a new effective date. Anything that changes what leaves your device will also be pointed out in the app.
